Program Description: This Defense Department’s regional security studies center seeks to develop the capabilities of defense and security professionals from Western Hemisphere countries to enhance their security policymaking and promote greater understanding of U.S. regional policymaking. Its establishment dates from a 1995 conference of Western Hemisphere defense ministers hosted by then U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry. This webinar will discuss this center’s academic mission and include broadcasts of past presentations and research publications addressing hemispheric security topics including drug trafficking, the pandemic’s impact, migration, and the interest of outside powers such as China in this region, whose security interests and developments may not receive as much public attention as Indo-Pacific, Middle East, or Europe but which are just as important to U.S. foreign policy and national security interests.

Program Description: The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is a U.S. Department of Transportation Agency responsible for America’s waterborne transportation system. Its policy making responsibilities cover ships and shipping, port and vessel operations, national security, environment, and safety. MARAD promotes waterborne transportation and makes sure it integrates well with other transportation nodes. It also maintains a fleet of cargo ships to provide extra sea lift capability in times of war or national emergency while also seeking to maintain U.S. Merchant Marine health. This webinar describes MARAD’s historical background and contemporary developments, while demonstrating information resources and data it uses to carry out current and emerging missions.

Program Description: Established in 1992 and dedicated in 1993, the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies is located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, is one of the Defense Department’s five regional security studies centers, and collaborates with the German Ministry of Defense. It addresses regional and transnational security issues for these two organizations and has an extensive multinational alumni network of security professionals. Areas of coverage include European security theater cooperation and strategies and objectives; support for such activity in the following Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan; along with a supporting relationship with Mongolia. This webinar explain this institution’s instructional activities and document its research output to enable enhanced user understanding of security issues in the geographic regions it covers.

Program Description: This presentation documents how this professional military education institute prepares leaders to meet U.S. economic, maritime transportation, and national security needs as Merchant Marine Officers and commissioned officers in the armed forces. Since 95% of world products are transported over water, such leaders are vital for effectively operating the merchant fleet for commercial and military transport in peacetime and wartime. Information will be provided about this academy’s admission process and academic programs, including the ‘Sea Year’ that gives cadets operational maritime experience.
